Temporary Engineering Aide (with little to no actual land surveying experience) @ $15.00 hr.

Temporary Engineering Tech I (with one or two years of land surveying experience) @ $17.00 hr.

Prefer University Surveying or Geomatics students to provide office research, office calculations, and GPS data collection. These temporary positions will be perfect for students interested in a land surveying career.

Wasco County has successfully obtained a grant to update our assessors maps to locate them with real world coordinates. This will allow the mapping to be integrated into GIS platforms.

The process will require the collection of GPS derived state plane coordinates for four or more known points on each of the County’s assessor’s maps. It is anticipated data will need to be collected on 200-300 such points each summer. This collected data will be checked, stored and transmitted to cartographers who will complete the mapping.

The work flow will be to:

 Research County survey records to find four points that have been monumented in previously filed surveys (iron rods, brass caps, iron pipes, etc.) that are deemed to be physically accessible and suitable for GPS observations. Ideally these will be the four corners of each map including the PLSS (Public Land Survey System) corners.

 Drive and hike to the calculated position of each point. Search for and find the monument of record.

 Collect GPS data on the found monument using the county’s RTK GPS units.

 While at the monument, photograph it, write appropriate field notes, and leave appropriate marking so that it can be found by others at a later date.

 Return to the office to store and catalog the GPS data in the manner prescribed by the project managers.

The project will be managed by County Professional Land Surveyors and will provide prospective survey or engineering students with a working knowledge of RTK GPS procedures, static GPS observations and the PLSS.

The duration of employment is June 19 through August 25, 2017, although the exact dates can be modified to fit student schedules.

If you are interested in this opportunity application packets can be found at or from Wasco County Human Resources Dept, 511 Washington St. #2015, The Dalles, OR 97058.
