The Department of Community Services is looking to hire a full-time (40 hours weekly) Engineering Technician 3 to act as the Survey Crew Chief.
The Engineering Technician 3 is part of the Multnomah County Survey Section. This section is responsible, among other things, for restoring and maintaining Public Land Corners; reviewing, filing and indexing work submitted by land surveyors; and providing survey support for capital improvement and other county projects.
In this position you will:
- Act as the lead crew member of the land survey crew for government corner restoration and maintenance, plat field inspections, and survey work on county roads and bridges
- Keep accurate field notes
- Perform preliminary survey work for construction such as topographical surveys
- Locate and maintain public land corner monuments and references by taking precise measurements and compiling detailed notes for analysis by field and office staff
- Read and interpret construction plans and calculate grades for roadbeds, (e.g., horizontal and vertical curves) storm and sanitary sewer lines and related utilities
- Oversee and direct the work of 1-3 personnel
- Communicate with engineers, other surveyors, construction contractors and workers and other members of the public
- Operate total station, GPS receivers and data collectors
- Drive stakes, iron pipes and iron rods with a sledgehammer, chop heavy brush with machetes, brush hook and chainsaw. Dig asphalt with a jackhammer. Tough hiking with equipment in steep wooded terrain. Use pick and shovel for digging
- Create safe traffic control plans for working in the right of way for the safety of the public and crew
- Drive and maintain survey vehicle, often driving up to 80+ miles per day
