Career Technical Education (CTE)

CTE provides learners with the knowledge and skills they need to be prepared for college and careers by giving purpose to learning by emphasizing real-world skills and practical knowledge within a selected career focus. PLSO is focusing on partnering with CTE teachers and counselors to bring land surveying into classrooms.

Career Fairs and Portland Workforce Alliance (PWA)

PLSO supports and participates in various college and career fairs throughout the state each year.

PWA builds enduring partnerships between local businesses and Portland-area high schools. By providing students with real-life work experiences and career-learning opportunities, PWA enriches their academic knowledge, inspires them to graduate and help them make informed choices after high school and college. PLSO participates in the NW Youth Careers Expo each year.

The number of licensed surveyors in Oregon has dropped by 63% in the last twenty years. Of those remaining surveyors, 69% are over the age of 51 and 43% are over the age of 61. Very few students are graduating surveying programs across the state. Surveyors and Engineers are both licensed by the Oregon Board of Examiners for Engineers and Licensed Surveyors (OSBEELS) and the requirements for education, testing and training is similar for both. However, engineers make 15-20% more than surveyors with similar education and experience. This must change or even fewer will pursue surveying in the future.
