    Job Description:

The Geomatics Department (Klamath Falls campus) is seeking applications for an academic full-time, renewable Geomatics faculty Instructor position. The Geomatics Department is part of the College of Engineering, Technology, and Management at Oregon Tech. This is the oldest BS Surveying program in the nation, with 70 years of continuous ABET (formerly ECPD) accreditation.

Oregon Tech’s Department of Geomatics is committed to inclusive thought and action in support of our diverse community. Individuals from historically underrepresented groups and all those who share our commitment to inclusivity and passion for the strength of our diversity are strongly encouraged to apply.

The primary duty for this position is the instruction of our departmental Geomatics courses. Geomatics is a student-centric department. Faculty are responsible for teaching both their classes and any associated labs. This dynamic learning environment is one aspect that attracts students to our programs. The department maintains attractive labs with modern surveying equipment.

Candidates must possess a strong desire and the ability to teach courses from freshman through upper division. A strong background in several areas including plane surveying, construction surveying, route design, subdivision design, legal aspects of

boundaries, geodesy, photogrammetry, remote sensing, UAS mapping, and map projections is required. Other skills such as experience in community service projects and contract work would also be desirable. The Geomatics Department has start-up funding to further the applied research interests of the successful candidate.

The BS GIS and BS Surveying options are now offered fully online as of fall 2023. The department’s national advertising has shown promising results. A state-wide Surveying Taskforce recently initiated efforts to recruit surveying students to address the critical shortage of land surveyors. Enrollment growth offers the potential for additional tenure-track faculty positions.

    Departmental Information:

The Geomatics program has two options for students to specialize in: Surveying or Geographical Information Systems.

Students who choose the Surveying Option will:

    • Use computer systems and equipment to find and define property lines in the city of sunshine
    • Plan out subdivisions to make creative and effective designs
    • Map boundary limits and learn how to write deed descriptions relative to property boundaries and more.

The land surveying option prepares students to pass the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination and pursue licensure as a registered Professional Land Surveyor (PLS).

Students who choose the GIS Option will:

    • Map and geodatabase topology
    • Learn how to program functions and procedures into geographic information systems
    • Study the Earth’s shape and how to project 2D and 3D maps onto its surface and more.

The GIS option will prepare students to become certified geographic information systems professionals.

All students learn the professional responsibility of protecting the health, safety and welfare of the public, and become aware of global and cultural issues related to their discipline.

The location of the Klamath Falls campus provides great conditions to survey and analyze the Earth around us because of the approximate 300 days of sunshine year-round and includes unique arrangements of physical features and slope differences.

    Qualification Requirements:

    • Master’s degree in a related field

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Oregon PLS licensure or the ability to become licensed within four years
    • PhD in related field
    • Experience teaching in higher education
    • Two years relevant industrial experience

    Special Instructions to Applicant:

Applications will continue to be accepted after the initial review date until a sufficient applicant pool has been achieved or the position is filled. Therefore, at the discretion of the University, materials received after the initial review date may not receive full consideration.
