The City of Portland has been a member of the CECOP since 2000 and hires interns in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering Management, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, GIS, and Geomatics (Surveying). The City is responsible for owning and maintaining roads, bridges, traffic signals, sewer lines, water lines, pump stations, water tanks, treatment plants and numerous other facilities to provide services to the 650,000 residents of Portland.
In Portland, the various departments are referred to as Bureau's. The Bureaus involved in CECOP include Environmental Services, Transportation, Water and Technology Services. Each Bureau typically hires several CECOP interns. The interns work on a wide variety of projects and assignments and are given an opportunity spend time with various departments within the Bureaus. The City has a large material testing laboratory, performs survey work for projects and operates wastewater treatment and potable water facilities. Interns get an opportunity to visit these facilities and some may be involved in projects involving them. Project planning, design, construction management and inspection are all possible areas where interns may work.
